A Political Autumn of Division on Poland’s Right

The Zondacrypto affair has covered up many of the problems on Poland’s political right. As the autumn political season begins, the right is not only divided, but also short of new ideas. The deadlock may be broken only by President Nawrocki, who has already more or less signaled that he could take on that role.

The turn of August and September traditionally marked the start of a new political season for Law and Justice, or PiS. Jarosław Kaczyński would return from holiday and get back to work, followed by the rest of the party. In recent years, the PiS leader usually spent his break in Western Pomerania. It is not known where he rested this year.

His first major post-holiday message, however, focused on the split inside PiS. The article presents the rupture as an issue clearly commanding Kaczyński’s attention. "For people who played a very large role in breaking up the party, there can be no question of a joint list with PiS," Kaczyński said.

That declaration set, perhaps somewhat unconsciously, the framework for the political autumn inside his party. Against a backdrop of division and an apparent lack of fresh proposals, the article points to Nawrocki as the person who could overcome the impasse.
