“A political crisis that exceeded our forecasts”: Nicușor Dan addresses Romanian diplomats

Romania’s political crisis has gone beyond what the country’s leaders expected, President Nicușor Dan told senior diplomats gathered in Bucharest.

Speaking to heads of diplomatic missions and Romanian consular offices at the annual Romanian Diplomacy Meeting, Dan said he hoped the relationship with the future government would produce an appropriate position for the Foreign Ministry. He pointed to delayed decisions on financing and administrative premises abroad, while saying foreign policy required preparation.

The president described Romania as a contributor to transatlantic security, NATO’s eastern flank and the wider region. He said Romanian diplomacy had three objectives: strengthening security, supporting Romanian communities outside the country and developing economic diplomacy.

It was a political crisis that exceeded our forecasts, and I hope that in our relationship with the future government we will find the right position for the Foreign Ministry.

Progress had been uneven, Dan said. “We have progressed more on some, less on others. This year will be better,” he said.

On security, the president said Romania had sought to strengthen its role within multilateral formats. His remarks came as diplomatic representatives were in Bucharest for the annual meeting, which brought together officials serving Romanian interests abroad.
