Abbas Dissolves All House Ad Hoc Committees With Immediate Effect

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has dissolved all its ad hoc committees after they failed to complete their assignments within the approved periods. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas ordered the move to take effect on Aug. 28, 2026.

The directive came in a statement issued by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, to the chairmen and members of the affected committees. Ibrahim said the House had previously instructed the committees to finish their work and submit reports by set deadlines.

I am directed by the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, to inform all Honourable Members that all Ad Hoc Committees of the House stand dissolved with immediate effect.

Only two committees requested more time, he said, and both received two-week extensions. Those extensions have now expired. Ibrahim said ad hoc committees are temporary bodies created for specific, time-bound mandates and are not meant to continue indefinitely.

They are not intended to subsist indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were constituted.

The clerk cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of the House Standing Orders, which sets limits for committee reports. Because the committees had exceeded their allotted periods, he said, their continued existence was no longer tenable.

The directive ordered an immediate end to all activities carried out in the committees’ names. Their chairmen were also told to submit outstanding reports, working documents, records and other assignment-related materials to the clerk’s office for safekeeping.
