Vanguard Media Limited, a privately held Nigerian media company, was established in 1984 by veteran journalist Sam Amuka-Pemu and three friends. Sam Amuka-Pemu remains active as its publisher. Revenue is generated through advertising, subscriptions, and newsstand sales.

Media Bias/Fact Check and Ground News rate Vanguard as having a 'Mixed' factual reporting score due to past misinformation and a 'Lean Left' bias on editorial positions. However, given Nigeria's 'partly-free' press environment, other analyses suggest the newspaper has published more political stories in favor of the government and has been accused of aligning coverage with powerful actors.
