Former Michigan health official Abdul El-Sayed, who holds a narrow lead in the state's Democratic Senate primary, stated Wednesday that "there's a lot of healing to do after a hard-fought primary like this." El-Sayed, seeking the Democratic nomination in a key Senate contest, expressed a welcoming stance to all who desire "a government of the people, by the people, and for the people." He acknowledged the heated primary against Rep. Haley Stevens, noting that he and Stevens had not yet spoken but that both are committed to bringing the party together. With only 13 weeks until the general election, El-Sayed stressed the urgency of uniting to defeat Republican Mike Rogers, whom he described as having "no business being in the U.S. Senate." He expressed gratitude for the hard-fought race, emphasizing that the issues uniting the party are far more significant than any divisions. The winner of the primary will face Rogers in November. Michigan, a traditionally Democratic state, has twice voted for President Trump. This seat is among several crucial for Democrats to defend to maintain control of the Senate. El-Sayed reiterated his campaign's core goals: "build a movement, to get money out of politics, put money in your pocket, pass Medicare for All." He contrasted this with Rogers, whom he characterized as wanting "to put more money in politics." El-Sayed believes these unifying goals are paramount to defeating Rogers and what he terms "Trumpism."
