Abdulwahab in Tears after Crashing Out of Boxing Event

Team Nigeria's boxing campaign at the Commonwealth Games began with a setback as Abdulramon Abdulwahab suffered a unanimous points defeat in the Men's 65kg Round of 32. Competing at the SEC Hall 5, Abdulwahab faced Uganda's Nuhu Batte and found the experienced opponent difficult to overcome. Batte dominated the three-round contest, showcasing superior ring management and cleaner combinations. All five judges scored in favor of the Ugandan, resulting in a convincing 5-0 victory for Batte and ending Abdulwahab's tournament at the first hurdle. Visibly emotional, Abdulwahab was in tears following the bout. He received consolation from the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, who presented him with cash. Olopade urged Abdulwahab to return to training, noting that while he is a good boxer, he needs to refine his technique for scoring in amateur boxing. The defeat represents an early blow to Nigeria's boxing squad, which arrived in Glasgow with hopes of continuing the nation's strong Commonwealth boxing tradition. Despite this early exit, optimism remains within the Nigerian camp as other boxers are yet to compete. The Nigerian athlete displayed determination until the final bell but could not overcome Batte's technical advantage. The loss, however, does not overshadow an otherwise memorable opening day for Team Nigeria, with attention now shifting to the remaining boxers.
