Abelardo de la Espriella: Colombia's rapid rise of a far-right political phenomenon

Abelardo de la Espriella is poised to make one of the most rapid political entries in recent Colombian history, transitioning from founding his own movement to becoming the nation's first far-right president in just over a year. Even before his official inauguration on August 7, he is already shaping the country's political and institutional landscape.

De la Espriella's campaign was characterized by a unique stage presence, including a signature military salute, cinematic videos, and the slogan "Patria Milagro" (Miracle Homeland). These elements have carried into his transition period, signaling a clear intention to differentiate himself from the policies of the outgoing government led by Gustavo Petro.

Born in Bogotá in 1978 but with strong ties to the Colombian Caribbean, De la Espriella built a successful career as a criminal lawyer before entering politics. He previously represented controversial clients such as businessman Alex Saab and David Murcia Guzmán, who was involved in a major pyramid scheme. He also participated in dialogues between the government of Álvaro Uribe and the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) two decades ago.

Known to his supporters as 'El Tigre' (The Tiger), De la Espriella cultivated an image of a successful businessman, also venturing into the spirits, wine, and fashion industries. He entered politics in July 2025, founding "Defensores de la Patria" (Defenders of the Homeland), which has now been recognized as a political party. He was convinced that Colombia was facing "its darkest hours" under Petro's administration. His campaign, inspired by figures like Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele, focused on restoring order, combating crime with an "iron fist," and transforming Colombia into a "Patria Milagro."
