Judiciary Council sets path for Supreme Court renewal

The National Magistracy Council (CNM) has officially begun the process to renew seats on the Supreme Court of Justice, establishing a timeline for evaluating the performance of its eleven judges. The constitutional terms for these judges concluded on April 3rd, initiating this crucial evaluation phase.

Adding a significant development, the current president of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Luis Henry Molina, and Judge Nancy Salcedo, the CNM's secretary, have announced they will not seek reappointment. Their decisions open up two of the eleven positions for renewal, marking a notable shift in the court's composition.

The CNM has approved a provisional schedule for the evaluation process, set to run from August 7 to October 23, 2026. This calendar outlines the stages for evaluating current magistrates and a subsequent phase for public applications to fill any vacancies. The council emphasized that this schedule may be adjusted as the process unfolds. In a move to enhance transparency, the CNM has mandated that all performance evaluation interviews will be conducted publicly, adhering to established regulations.

The CNM session, presided over by President Luis Abinader, included key figures such as the presidents of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, along with other senators, deputies, and constitutional court officials. The council confirmed that all members were present, establishing the necessary quorum for their deliberations. This structured approach aims to ensure a thorough and transparent renewal of the highest court.
