Abia State government pledges improved welfare, opportunities for corps members

The Abia State government is prioritizing the welfare and development of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, introducing a comprehensive package of initiatives. Governor Alex Otti announced these measures during the swearing-in ceremony for the 2026 Batch B Stream II corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umunna.

I urge you, as young graduates, to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme because our investments in digital innovation, software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and the TechRise initiative were designed to prepare youths for opportunities in the emerging global economy.

Represented by Mrs. Jane Igwe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Governor Otti assured the corps members that their welfare and security are paramount. The administration has undertaken significant upgrades at the orientation camp, including renovating internal roads to address erosion, improving the clinic and kitchen facilities, enhancing water supply, and installing solar-powered streetlights.

The state is also focusing on entrepreneurship and digital skills, urging graduates to engage with programs in digital innovation, software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the TechRise initiative. These programs are designed to prepare them for emerging global economic opportunities. Furthermore, the government has removed administrative hurdles delaying the payment of state allowances for corps members.

Local government chairmen have been directed to establish NYSC Local Government Committees to strengthen grassroots support and welfare delivery. Earlier, the Abia State Coordinator of the NYSC, Yunusa Tanimu, reported that 1,526 corps members (689 male, 875 female) had been successfully registered and sworn in for the orientation exercise, which began on August 5. He highlighted the NYSC's role in promoting national unity by bringing together graduates from diverse backgrounds.
