AboutFishing selected as growth tourism venture, to develop 'stay-type fishing tourism' model

AboutFishing, a platform specializing in fishing, has been recognized for its innovative approach to tourism by being selected for the 18th Growth Tourism Venture Support Program. This government-backed initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, aims to foster new tourism models.

The company's core strategy revolves around developing a "stay-type fishing tourism model." Unlike traditional tourism that centers on pre-determined accommodations or attractions, AboutFishing leverages fishing as a primary activity that drives travel and subsequent spending in local areas. This model capitalizes on the fact that fishing often requires travel to specific locations, creating opportunities for related economic activity.

Since its launch in 2022, AboutFishing has facilitated the movement of approximately 30,000 anglers to various fishing spots nationwide. The platform integrates booking services, e-commerce for fishing gear, and real-time fishing condition data. The new venture support will enable the company to expand this by linking fishing excursions with local businesses. This includes reservations for boats and fishing sites, pre-trip purchases of equipment and bait, and connections to nearby shops, restaurants, and even local tourist attractions.

Song Dong-hyun, CEO of AboutFishing, expressed optimism about the selection, stating, "This selection is an opportunity to recognize the potential to expand fishing into an industry that generates local tourism consumption." He added, "We will build a stay-type fishing tourism model that combines accommodation, food and beverage, equipment, and local businesses to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy."
