Abu Dhabi launches Livability by Design Framework for major urban developments

Abu Dhabi is prioritizing people in its urban planning with the introduction of the 'Livability by Design Framework.' This new master planning assessment tool places livability at the core of every significant urban development, aligning with the emirate's long-term vision to foster healthier, more connected, and people-centric communities. The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) introduced the framework to enhance long-term wellbeing and support Abu Dhabi's goal of becoming a premier global destination for living, working, and investing.

The framework, overseen by the Urban Planning and Permits Centre (UPPC), will be applied to all new and updated master plans designed for populations exceeding 2,000 residents. This includes mixed-use developments and tourism destinations. By embedding livability principles from the outset, the framework moves beyond traditional planning requirements. It aims to ensure that communities are designed with residents in mind, promoting walkability, accessible mobility options, and vibrant public spaces.
