Belgium Wildfire: Firefighters in Decisive Push to Encircle Blaze

Firefighters are engaged in what officials describe as a potentially decisive push to encircle Belgium's largest wildfire in a century. The blaze, raging across the High Fens nature reserve, has already charred 3,000 hectares of peatland, pine trees, and hiking trails, an area roughly half the size of Manhattan. Hundreds of firefighters have been working around the clock to gain control of the fire, which grew significantly over the weekend. While much of the fire is now contained, a challenging front near the German border remains a concern, exacerbated by gusty easterly winds. "This day will likely be decisive if firefighters succeed in their strategy of encircling the fire," said crisis cell spokesman Tony Hosmans. "If that happens, the fire will be completely surrounded, and we can hope to stop its advance." Operations are complicated by the difficult terrain of the fens, which includes heath, peat bogs, and raised boardwalks, posing risks for heavy vehicles. Adding to the challenge, rain clouds have hampered air support operations, though they may eventually aid containment efforts.
