Abuja Authorities Launch Crackdown on Traffic Violations

Authorities in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, have launched a sustained special enforcement operation to combat widespread disregard for traffic regulations. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other agencies, is targeting offenses including traffic light violations and driving against the flow of traffic.

We are extremely happy to have this special collaboration with the Sector Command of the FCT. I think this is the first time that we’re having this kind of collaboration.

Mr. Chinedum Elechi, the Mandate Secretary for the FCTA Transportation Secretariat, announced the initiative on Thursday, stating that a dedicated task force would patrol the city and arrest offenders. He explained that the enforcement drive was prompted by an increasing number of motorists flouting traffic rules, a situation exacerbated by the FCT's ongoing road network expansion under the administration of FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike.

Elechi expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the FCTA and the FRSC's FCT Sector Command, calling it a significant step toward restoring order to the territory's traffic management system. He noted that while the administration's urban renewal program has improved mobility, it has also presented new challenges, with some drivers exploiting the enhanced infrastructure to break rules.

The enforcement operation will focus on key violations such as ignoring traffic lights and control devices, route infractions, illegal parking, and driving against traffic. Elechi warned all motorists and commercial transport operators to adhere to traffic laws, use designated routes, and park only in approved areas. He stressed that apprehended offenders would face appropriate sanctions under national and FCT regulations, which may include mandatory medical and psychological evaluations.
