Abuja police detain officers accused of N40,000 extortion

The FCT Police Command has taken officers into custody following allegations of extorting 40,000 naira from a resident in Abuja. The incident, which gained traction on social media through a circulating video, reportedly took place along the Wuye-Utako Road near Salem Church.

Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, confirmed that the officers depicted in the video have been identified and are currently detained. The Command has also extended an invitation to the complainant to provide an official statement at the FCT Police Command Headquarters to aid the ongoing investigation and disciplinary proceedings.

The video, which began circulating around August 24, features a man claiming that on August 20, 2026, police officers collected the sum of 40,000 naira despite verifying his documents were complete. Footage showing a receipt and a conversation after the alleged incident was shared.

Commissioner Sanusi emphasized the Command's firm stance against any form of extortion, abuse of authority, or unprofessional conduct. He assured that any officer found culpable after due investigation would face appropriate disciplinary and legal actions in accordance with established laws and regulations.

This incident occurs amidst recurring public complaints about police extortion in Abuja. The Command urges the public to report instances of police misconduct and provide information to assist investigations. Similar warnings were issued in June and July 2026 regarding officers extorting commercial operators.
