Oyo police explain why Kwara officers tried to arrest Tani Olohun

The Oyo State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding an attempted arrest of Abdulazeez Adegbola, widely known as Tani Olohun, in Ibadan. Officers from the Kwara State Police Command were reportedly in Ibadan to execute a warrant issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court.

According to the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the warrant was issued over allegations concerning conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace. The court reportedly ordered Tani Olohun's arrest after he failed to meet the conditions of his earlier bail.

Videos circulating on social media showed a confrontation between the officers and residents, with Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, intervening. The footage depicted men, appearing to be police officers, attempting to apprehend Tani Olohun, an Isese adherent, while residents resisted.

The Command wishes to clarify that the officers were acting pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin, in connection with allegations bordering on conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police for Oyo State instructed the Kwara officers to return to their base. He advised the complainant to seek legal recourse through the appropriate court in Ibadan, emphasizing the principle of territorial jurisdiction for offenses allegedly committed in the area.

The Oyo State Police Command urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding, discouraging actions that could disturb the peace or escalate the situation. The command affirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and handling complaints professionally.

Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, directed the officers to return back to their base and advised the complainant to approach the appropriate court in Ibadan, being the alleged place where the offence was committed, in accordance with due process and the principles of territorial jurisdiction.
