Academics Likely to Face Charges in Bangladesh Uprising Crimes Case

Academics Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and ASM Maksud Kamal are reportedly nearing charges in a crimes against humanity case connected to the July 2024 Uprising. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor's office stated that its investigation into the alleged roles of the two academics is in its final stages. Formal charges are being prepared against several teachers, including Iqbal and Kamal, pending approval from the chief prosecutor.

The disclosure came during arguments in a separate crimes against humanity case against Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six others. The tribunal had inquired about the absence of Maksud Kamal, a former Dhaka University vice-chancellor, from that case, noting his conversations with then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the uprising.
