Accord Party Members Protest, Demand Recognition of Imumolen as National Chairman

Members of the Accord Party staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, demanding the immediate recognition of Christopher Imumolen as the party's national chairman. The demonstrators, carrying placards and a formal petition, urged INEC to adhere to existing court orders that validate Mr. Imumolen's leadership and to update its records accordingly.

We have not come here to cause any problem, but to speak because it seems INEC has not been listening.

During the protest, Mr. Imumolen, a former presidential candidate, voiced his frustration with what he described as INEC's reluctance to enforce judicial decisions. He emphasized that as a regulatory body, INEC must maintain neutrality and uphold the rule of law. "A court order is not advisory; it is meant to be obeyed," he stated, questioning why INEC complied with similar orders for other parties, such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but not for Accord.

INEC should not be found supporting one faction over another, especially when there is a court order giving direction on what to do. A court order is not advisory; it is meant to be obeyed.

Mr. Imumolen highlighted that despite numerous court orders and petitions submitted to INEC, the commission continues to recognize the faction led by Maxwell Mgbudem. He alleged that the Mgbudem-led faction has been involved in the illegal removal of state chairmen who support the court-mandated leadership. The protesters' demands included the immediate recognition and formal listing of Mr. Imumolen on the INEC website, and a cessation of recognition for Mr. Mgbudem, as no court order authorizes such recognition.
