Accused in Shamim Molla murder case made acting president of student group

Ahsan Labib, who is accused in cases over the death of former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Shamim Molla, has been made acting president of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti’s central committee.

The organisation announced the appointment in a press release after President Zahid Ahsan resigned on Wednesday, citing personal reasons. Labib also serves as the social welfare secretary of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union.

Shamim, a former leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Jahangirnagar University unit, was reportedly beaten to death on the campus on Sept. 18, 2024. Two days later, the university administration filed a murder case with Ashulia Police Station against eight students, including Labib, and 20 to 25 unidentified people.

Shamim’s elder brother, Shahin Alam, later filed another murder case in a Dhaka court on Oct. 9, 2024. That case names nine Jahangirnagar University students, including Labib, as well as university officials including Chief Security Officer Sudipta Shaheen, Deputy Registrar Gafrul Hasan Chowdhury and Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam.

Labib has remained absconding since the cases were filed. Sub-inspector Anisur Rahman Bappy of the Police Bureau of Investigation, the case’s investigating officer, said, "The case is still under investigation. Action will be taken against those who have not been arrested based on the findings of the investigation."
