Four senior police officers dismissed for misconduct and desertion

Bangladesh has dismissed four senior police officers after departmental proceedings found charges of misconduct and desertion proved against them. The Home Ministry’s Discipline-1 Branch issued four separate notifications, signed by Senior Secretary Monjur Morshed Chowdhury on behalf of the president.

The officers are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner Sanjit Kumar Roy, former deputy commissioner Manas Kumar Podder, former Rangpur superintendent of police Mohammad Shahjahan, and additional superintendent of police Hafiz Al Faruk.

According to the notifications, all four remained away from their workplaces without authorization. Authorities also said they failed to submit written replies within the required period after receiving show-cause notices, and did not respond to later notices after the charges were established.

Roy’s dismissal took effect on September 17, 2024, the date he stopped attending work without permission. Authorities said they tried to contact him at his current and permanent addresses and by email, but he did not return. Podder’s dismissal took effect on October 18, 2024, after he remained absent while attached to the Barishal Range deputy inspector general’s office during his suspension.

Shahjahan was dismissed from January 16, 2025. He did not return after his casual leave ended and did not notify authorities in writing or verbally. Faruk, who was posted at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, was dismissed from February 1, 2025, after taking five days of leave, reporting illness, and then remaining away for an extended period without proper authorization. The Public Service Commission later agreed with the dismissal proposals.
