Aceh Tackles Forest Fires with Weather Modification Operations

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), with assistance from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), has initiated weather modification operations in Aceh. The initiative aims to combat the escalating forest and land fires (karhutla) plaguing the region.

A Cessna Grand Caravan EX aircraft is being utilized for the operation. It disperses sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, at specific altitudes and bearings. The process involves seeding clouds with salt particles to influence rainfall patterns, a technique known as cloud seeding.

The operation is specifically targeting areas in West Aceh, Nagan Raya, and North Aceh regencies. By managing rainfall, authorities hope to suppress the fires and mitigate further damage. The flights are conducted at altitudes between 5,000 and 10,000 feet, covering a range of 90 nautical miles.

This measure is part of a broader effort to control the devastating impact of forest and land fires, which have become a recurring issue in Indonesia, particularly during the dry season. The success of these operations could provide crucial relief to the affected regions.
