Acting Reykjanesbær Mayor Earned More Than Current Mayor

Reykjanesbær's acting mayor, Halldóra Fríða Þorvaldsdóttir, earned significantly more than the current mayor, Vilhjálmur Árnason, during her tenure. Her combined monthly salary as acting mayor and councilor fluctuated between approximately 3 million and 3.3 million Icelandic krónur. In April 2025, her earnings peaked at 3,794,137 krónur.

Þorvaldsdóttir served as acting mayor from November 2024 to August 2025, stepping in during the illness of Kjartan Már Kjartansson, who also briefly returned to duties in February and March 2025. Kjartansson, who was not an elected councilor, received a monthly salary of 2,872,306 krónur.

In contrast, current mayor Vilhjálmur Árnason earns 2,630,942 krónur as mayor, plus an additional 241,364 krónur for his role as a councilor, totaling 2,872,306 krónur per month. He also declines meeting fees for council sessions. Þorvaldsdóttir, representing the Progressive Party, had criticized Árnason's contract as an "excessive salary agreement" in a statement from the minority bloc on the council.
