Acting U.S. Intelligence Chief Dismisses Officials Appointed by Tulsi Gabbard

Bill Pulte, the acting director of U.S. National Intelligence, has initiated a significant restructuring of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) by dismissing six individuals appointed by his predecessor, Tulsi Gabbard. This move also involves returning about 45 officials on temporary assignments to their original agencies.

Sources familiar with the situation indicated that these officials were detailed to the ODNI, meaning they worked there but remained officially employed by other government bodies. Their reassignment marks a key step in Pulte's plan to reshape the intelligence community's leadership.

Despite initial concerns among some Republicans regarding Pulte's lack of national security experience, his reform plan and collaboration with the Senate Intelligence Committee have reportedly eased some reservations. While Republicans generally support efforts to reduce bureaucracy, Democrats have voiced concerns that large-scale dismissals could potentially undermine U.S. national security.

The ODNI was established to improve coordination among intelligence agencies, a response to perceived failures in intelligence sharing prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks. Although criticized for bureaucracy, it remains a vital institution. Pulte was appointed by President Donald Trump with a mandate to "execute the immediate and necessary reduction in the size of the institution."
