Activists Charged for Hanging Banner at Agriculture & Food Association

Six activists from Greenpeace are facing charges after unfurling a large banner at the headquarters of Agriculture & Food in Copenhagen. The banner, which declared "Here the dead fjords begin," was intended to draw attention to the issue of water pollution in Denmark's fjords and coastal waters.

The incident began early in the morning when the protesters gained access to the building's facade. Copenhagen Police received a report of the demonstration shortly after 7 a.m. The activists eventually descended and removed the banner voluntarily before noon, with police stating the operation proceeded calmly and no arrests were made.

However, the activists have been charged with violating public order regulations for failing to comply with police orders and for trespassing under the Danish penal code. Greenpeace stated that ten activists were involved in the action.

This protest highlights ongoing environmental concerns in Denmark, particularly regarding the health of its waterways. The "dead fjords" referenced in the banner likely allude to eutrophication, a process where excessive nutrient pollution leads to oxygen depletion, harming aquatic life.

The activists are charged partly for violating public order regulations, as they did not comply with the police's orders. And partly for violating the penal code's provision on trespassing.
