Activists warn of damaged groundwater vein on Sava embankment; construction continues despite court order

Activists from the "For Our Quay" association are sounding the alarm over severe damage to a groundwater vein near the EXPO construction site on the Sava embankment. They report that a lake has formed due to the ongoing work on a rapid transit road, with workers digging a trench over a meter deep just 15 meters from the embankment. This action, they contend, directly endangers the stability of the Sava embankment.

Branislav Tomić, an activist with the association, stated that such deep excavation should not have occurred. He pointed out that openings were made in two places from the service road into the lateral canal to discharge water, actions for which, he claims, no permits were obtained. The activists have filed a criminal complaint regarding the construction work on the Sava embankment, extending the complaint to include the Ministry of Construction.

Furthermore, the initiative "Belgrade Stays" has demanded an immediate cessation of all construction activities at Belgrade's water sources and within their protective zones. They argue that the city faces potential problems with its water supply due to these ongoing projects. The situation highlights a conflict between development projects and environmental protection concerns in Belgrade.
