Actor Samuel Monroe Jr. dies at 52 after meningitis battle

Actor Samuel Monroe Jr., a familiar face in 1990s cult cinema, has died at the age of 52. Monroe passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a prolonged and difficult health battle.

His mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed his death, stating that he died at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. She expressed gratitude for the prayers received and announced that God had called him home. Monroe's wife, Shawna Stewart, also shared the news, honoring his strength throughout a nine-month health ordeal.

Stewart revealed that Monroe had been suffering from complications after contracting meningitis. The infection was reportedly misdiagnosed for eight months, leading to severe brain swelling, seizures, and loss of mobility. These complications resulted in further issues, including MRSA pneumonia, and Monroe was placed on life support in April.

To help manage the significant medical expenses and rehabilitation costs, Monroe's stepdaughter, Tayonna Stewart, launched a GoFundMe campaign. The campaign highlighted the immense emotional and financial strain on the family due to the extended hospitalization. Funds raised will also assist in arranging a "proper and respectful celebration of life."
