ADC chieftain praises Atiku and Osinbajo for attending Amaechi’s mother’s funeral

A senior African Democratic Congress figure has praised political leaders from across Nigeria for attending the funeral of Rotimi Amaechi’s mother, presenting the ceremony as a moment when partisan differences gave way to family and cultural obligations.

Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze singled out former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo for identifying with the Amaechi family at the burial of Dame Ezinne Mary Orduah Amaechi. He also praised Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for attending despite their political differences with Amaechi and one another.

Eze, however, accused Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike of trying to create competing events in Ikwerre Local Government Area on the day of the burial in Ubima. He cited a civic reception organized by the City Boy Movement at St Martins Anglican Church in Omagwa, meetings with Ikwerre chiefs, elders and stakeholders, and community wrestling events near Ubima. Eze alleged that the events were intended to distract from the funeral or discourage prominent people from attending.

Vindictive, divisive and destructive politics

He also criticized the alleged blocking of one lane of the Isiokpo Expressway as mourners returned from the funeral, saying the resulting congestion inconvenienced senior citizens and other dignitaries. Eze called the situation “a great embarrassment” and described the scheduling of rival events during the burial as “vindictive, divisive and destructive politics.” He said the alleged effort to disrupt attendance had failed because the ceremony drew prominent Nigerians from different political, ethnic and geographical backgrounds.

It is difficult to understand what could motivate a political leader to deliberately create a competing political gathering on a day when an important son of Rivers State is burying his mother.
