Adeleke campaign seeks police guarantee for peaceful Osun election

The Imole Campaign Council has called on Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to publicly assure residents of Osun State of a peaceful and impartial governorship election scheduled for August 15. The council, through its spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi, emphasized the need for neutrality among security personnel before, during, and after the poll.

Concerns were raised regarding the reinstatement of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan as the Osun State Commissioner of Police. The campaign council alleged that actions under his previous watch had cast doubt on the police command's neutrality. They urged the IGP to prevent security agencies from being used to intimidate any political group.

The Inspector-General of Police must address the people of Osun State and assure them of a violence-free poll on August 15, 2026.

The council also demanded an end to the alleged harassment of political opponents through arrests and detentions, stating that credible elections depend on impartial security forces. The appeal follows recent discussions about police deployments in the state, with political parties consistently calling for neutrality. The Nigeria Police Force, however, maintains that its personnel operate professionally and remain non-partisan during elections.

The call for security assurances comes less than two weeks before the August 15 election, for which the Independent National Electoral Commission has finalized preparations. Security agencies are expected to play a vital role in maintaining order during the voting process.
