Adult, betting, AI websites dominate Nigerian web traffic in July – Report

Adult websites, betting platforms, and artificial intelligence services captured a significant portion of Nigerian web traffic in July, a report from Semrush's Traffic Analytics tool revealed. While Google and YouTube maintained their top positions with millions of visits, adult content sites and online betting services surged in popularity.

XVideos ranked third with 37.64 million visits, followed closely by SportyBet at fourth with 36.28 million. ChatGPT, the prominent AI platform, secured the fifth spot with 35.32 million visits, marking a 9.81 percent increase from the previous month and a substantial 33.43 percent rise year-on-year. Other adult sites like XNXX and Pornhub also featured in the top rankings, indicating a strong user interest in these categories.

In contrast, major social media platforms experienced traffic declines. Facebook saw a 38.92 percent year-on-year decrease, and X (formerly Twitter) declined by 23.16 percent over the same period. However, TikTok showed a 16.49 percent year-on-year increase, and WhatsApp's traffic rose by 16.85 percent month-on-month, despite a slight year-on-year dip. The report highlighted that direct traffic primarily drives the top 100 websites in Nigeria, with a smaller reliance on search and social media referrals.
