Aerial targets detected near border: RO-Alert in Tulcea, F-16s scrambled

Romania's air surveillance system detected a group of aerial targets near its border with Ukraine on Thursday evening, prompting the scramble of two F-16 fighter jets. The Ministry of National Defense (MApN) reported the incident, stating that the targets were in proximity to the river border with Ukraine.

The MApN's radar surveillance system detected a group of aerial targets in the proximity of the river border with Ukraine on Thursday evening. Two F-16 aircraft from the 86th Borcea Air Base were scrambled to monitor the situation at 9:12 PM.

The National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, which issued a RO-Alert for the population in Tulcea County. Residents were warned about potential falling objects from the airspace and advised to seek shelter. This was not the first such alert for the region, as a similar warning was issued in the morning regarding an aerial target detected around 8:50 AM.

The MApN indicated that it would provide further information as the situation evolved. The detection of drones near the Danube Delta has become more frequent, with warnings to residents in northern Dobrogea about the risk of fragments or other objects falling onto Romanian territory. These alerts are attributed to Russia's ongoing attacks on port and energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine, areas situated close to the Romanian border. A significant incident occurred on July 26, when Romanian air forces shot down drones that had entered national territory, marking the third consecutive day of such interceptions.
