Africa's Top 10 Passports for Visa-Free Travel in 2026 Revealed

The 2026 Henley Passport Index has unveiled the top 10 African passports, highlighting countries that offer their citizens the most visa-free travel. The ranking, which assesses 199 passports against 227 travel destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), shows varying degrees of global mobility for African nations.

Among the leading passports is The Gambia, ranking 10th in Africa with access to 70 destinations. Despite its small size, the country benefits from regional cooperation and its membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which facilitates travel within West Africa for business and trade. Tourism is a significant foreign exchange earner for The Gambia.

Kenya also secured a spot in the top 10, offering access to 70 destinations. Its strong diplomatic ties, a robust aviation sector, and its status as East Africa's largest economy contribute to its passport's global standing. Eswatini and Morocco share the 8th and 7th positions respectively, each providing access to 71 destinations, bolstered by regional economic ties and strategic locations.

Lesotho and Namibia also feature prominently, with Lesotho offering access to 73 destinations and Namibia to 74. Their positions are supported by economic integration within Southern Africa and strong governance, respectively. Notably, Nigeria's passport was not among the continent's top 10, ranking 90th globally and 45th in Africa with access to only 44 destinations, a stark contrast to Ghana's 70th global rank and access to 67 destinations.
