African Swine Fever Confirmed in 13 Serbian Municipalities; Over 36,000 Pigs Destroyed

African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to plague Serbia, with the disease now confirmed in 13 municipalities across the country. Agriculture Ministry official Vladimir Nikolic reported that over 36,000 pigs have either died or been culled since the outbreak began this year.

African Swine Fever has been reported across Serbia adding that more than 36,000 pigs have been destroyed since the outbreak.

Nikolic, who heads the Ministry's Forestry Department, detailed that the affected pigs numbered 36,101. These losses have occurred across seven districts, 13 municipalities, and 62 settlements throughout Serbia. While the number of new infections has shown a decline in recent days, authorities are maintaining rigorous biosecurity protocols.

These measures include the disinfection of vehicles and individuals, restricting access to affected forest areas, and closely monitoring animal movement. The situation is under particularly close observation in the Srem, Macva, and Kolubara districts, as well as the Belgrade region. The disease has also been detected in 16 out of 17 hunting grounds managed by Vojvodinasume, indicating a widespread presence.

He said the number of new cases dropped over the past few days with the authorities maintaining strict biosecurity measures, including disinfecting vehicles and people, restricting access to affected forests and monitoring movement.

The Serbian government is actively working to contain the spread of ASF, a highly contagious viral disease that poses a significant threat to the country's pig farming industry. The ongoing efforts focus on preventing further transmission and mitigating the economic impact of the outbreak.
