After Announcing Their Breakup, Hipokritai Reveal a Major Return

The ending of Hipokritai lasted only a few weeks. After publicly announcing that the band was finished, the group has returned with a new lineup, a new song called “Eteris” and plans for a new album this autumn.

The new core consists of founder Edgaras Bechteris and musician and performer Benas Povilonis. Povilonis may look like a new addition to listeners, but he has worked on Hipokritai’s creative process for several years and composed music for more than one of the band’s earlier songs. He was officially presented as a band member this summer.

When we announced that the band was ending, it was a completely natural decision at that moment. After seven years, a lot had built up and we simply needed to stop. Several members left, our minds reset, and silence appeared. In that silence, I understood that Hipokritai had not ended. One chapter had ended.

Bechteris said the original decision to stop felt natural after seven years of activity and the departure of several members. The pause gave the musicians time to step back, and he concluded that Hipokritai itself had not ended. Only one phase had.

I do not want to restore the old Hipokritai. There is no point. I want to see what they can become now, with a different sound, different themes and completely different creative freedom.

The return is not intended to recreate the old band. Bechteris described “Eteris” as the first work of a new period, with a different sound, different themes and greater creative freedom. Povilonis said the pair no longer wanted to make music simply because another song had to be released. They wanted to release only music that reflected what they were living through at the time.

“Eteris,” written by Bechteris and composed by Povilonis, focuses on a person’s relationship with themselves and the world. The song presents a satirical view of someone so absorbed in opinions, image, ideology and the need to prove something that they forget how to live. Filming the music video nearly ended badly for Bechteris when a scene required him to run at full speed after a moving car. After about five rehearsals, the first filmed attempt became the last.

Sometimes you have to lose something to finally understand what you really want to keep. We no longer want to create because we have to release another song. We want to release only what we are living through at that moment.
