About Delfi

Delfi was founded in 1999 by the Estonian company MicroLink. In 2007, it was acquired by the Estonian media conglomerate Ekspress Grupp, which remains its parent company. Delfi's revenue is generated through advertisements and subscriptions.

Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) rates Delfi as Right-Center biased, noting that its editorial positions slightly favor the right on social issues and sometimes use loaded language in headlines, though the article bodies generally maintain a neutral tone. MBFC also rates Delfi as 'Mostly Factual' in its reporting, but indicates 'poor sourcing techniques' such as linking to general topic pages instead of specific reports. Delfi strongly opposes the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A notable controversy involved a 2015 European Court of Human Rights ruling that Delfi.ee (the Estonian version) was liable for defamatory user comments, a decision criticized by press freedom advocates as a blow to online freedom of expression.
