After meeting Putin, Zelenskyy urgently receives Trump’s envoys in Kyiv and sets out demands for peace

Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff went from a three-hour meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow to talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, as the United States seeks to revive efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The rapid movement between the two capitals underscored the central role Washington is trying to play in negotiations that have so far delivered little.

The US envoys met Putin on Saturday and Zelenskyy on Sunday, but there appeared to be no progress on the conflict after the Moscow discussions. Putin described his meeting with the envoys as “very useful.” A White House official told Reuters that the next steps would be announced in the coming weeks.

The earlier rounds of US-mediated talks were encouraged by President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a promise to end the war quickly. Trump said on Friday that the United States had a new proposal, but he did not disclose its details.

Zelenskyy believes Washington will be crucial to any peace agreement. Before the envoys arrived, he said he had held a preparatory meeting with his negotiating team and that Ukraine wanted to end the war. “We need security guarantees. We need a dignified postwar peace. Our proposals have already been prepared,” he said.

British, French and German national security advisers were also in Kyiv on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the matter, although the source did not specify which meetings they would attend. Zelenskyy said there was an opportunity to reach peace before the United States began focusing on the next presidential election the following summer.
