After months of conflict, Essap announces final stage of Coronel Oviedo Hospital's sewage system

After months of disruptions, the Paraguayan sanitation company Essap has announced the final phase of the sewage system upgrade for the General Hospital in Coronel Oviedo. The company confirmed that the installation and assembly of new filters are complete, and work is now focused on automating the system.

Essap communicated to local residents that a technical team will return on August 26 to finalize the last stage of the project, with the goal of making the system fully operational and ready for inauguration. The new filters are designed to operate automatically or manually, providing flexibility in their function.

The project had previously encountered significant conflict with residents of Pindoty, primarily concerning the planned discharge of treated wastewater from the hospital. These issues led to various meetings and measures that delayed the continuation of the sewage system works. A working group, including representatives from the Governorate of Caaguazú, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), the Pindoty Neighborhood Commission, and Essap, was formed in October to address these concerns.

During that working group session, Essap presented an action plan that incorporated the residents' proposals, ultimately leading to an agreement to move forward with the project. The installation of the filters was part of a public tender (ID 474.963) with an investment of G. 452,643,332 and an initial execution deadline of 90 days. Essap is also undertaking another tender for the maintenance of facultative lagoons (ID No. 486.404) with an additional investment of G. 1.7 billion, aimed at improving the system's efficiency and sustainability for the Pindoty community.
