After record highs in June: What Bavaria expects from the new heatwave

Bavaria is set to experience another intense heatwave, with temperatures predicted to climb significantly in the coming days, just as the summer holidays begin. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts that highs could reach 40 degrees Celsius along the Lower Main river on Thursday, while much of the rest of the state will see temperatures soar to 33 degrees and above.

Even at higher altitudes, the heat will be noticeable, with temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius possible at 2,000 meters and 14 degrees on the Zugspitze. The mercury is already rising sharply on Wednesday, with the DWD predicting statewide highs between 31 and 37 degrees. A slight risk of thunderstorms exists in the Alps later in the day. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to between 14 and 21 degrees, with some regions potentially experiencing tropical nights – a pattern likely to continue in the following nights.

Heat warnings are anticipated from Wednesday through Friday, particularly in southeastern Germany. These warnings are issued when the perceived temperature exceeds 32 degrees Celsius in the early afternoon. The DWD advises adherence to three fundamental rules during such periods: avoid the heat, drink ample fluids, and keep living spaces cool. Simple measures like a cool shower or a foot bath can offer additional relief.

The Federal Environment Agency also cautions against spending extended periods in parked cars or leaving people or animals inside them. As the summer holidays commence this weekend, residents in Bavaria should prepare for continued high temperatures. The DWD's ten-day forecast suggests that early August will also bring numerous hot days across large parts of the state.
