Konrad Warzecha, an experienced traveler who has explored 43 European capitals, has identified Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, as his personal favorite. Despite being impressed by cities like Rome for its atmosphere and Warsaw for its gastronomy, Warzecha finds Skopje uniquely captivating for its authentic spirit, which he believes is diminishing in more mainstream tourist hubs.

Warzecha notes that Skopje has managed to retain its original character, largely untouched by the overwhelming wave of mass tourism that has transformed many other European cities into mere backdrops for visitors. He points to a significant increase in air arrivals to North Macedonia, with a 40% rise in the first quarter of 2026 according to World Bank data, suggesting that Skopje's unique appeal might not last.

Initially, Warzecha had modest expectations for Skopje, finding its outskirts unremarkable. However, the city center completely surprised him. He was particularly drawn to Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge, and the Old Bazaar, appreciating the eclectic mix of architectural styles that narrate the city's rich history. The blend of neoclassical elements from the Skopje 2014 project with Byzantine and Ottoman influences creates a distinctive and somewhat surreal ambiance.

Describing the city as exceptionally well-maintained and beautiful, Warzecha emphasized its walkability, noting that the entire center can be explored in about half an hour. He also felt a strong sense of security, even late at night, contributing to a relaxed atmosphere. Public transport is affordable, and a weekly pass includes a cable car ride to the Millennium Cross on Vodno Mountain, offering panoramic city views. Even evening outings are budget-friendly, with a large local beer costing little, according to research.
