Agnė Buškevičiūtė's 'Twisted Mirrors' Explores Social Media's Impact on Self-Identity

Agnė Buškevičiūtė's new song, "Twisted Mirrors," delves into the struggle of maintaining self-identity in a world saturated with curated online personas. The artist describes the song's narrative as a journey through a "hall of mirrors" where distorted reflections expose fears and traumas, leading to a crisis of self-doubt.

The song tells the story of a person who has entered a hall of mirrors. In this kingdom, all mirrors are distorted – they no longer reflect the truth, but expose your fears, unhealed wounds, and traumas. The longer you stay there, the more you begin to forget your true reflection and eventually doubt who you really are.

Buškevičiūtė explains that this "hall of mirrors" is a metaphor for the social media landscape, where self-worth is often measured by likes, followers, and comparisons to others' seemingly perfect lives. She admits to experiencing this feeling herself, where prolonged exposure to others' successes can erode one's own sense of value.

Of course, the hall of mirrors itself is just a metaphor leading to the world of social networks, where there is a lot of comparison, measuring one's worth by reactions, followers, and numbers.

The song, co-created with a Norwegian team and recorded in Bergen, features orchestral elements and an "epic cinematic" style, appealing to fans of fantasy worlds and game soundtracks. Despite its fantastical narrative, Buškevičiūtė emphasizes the universal theme of self-discovery and the importance of an "inner anchor" to remember one's true self amidst external pressures.

It is necessary to be strong enough to find that true mirror in the world of twisted mirrors and remember yourself as you truly are. Essentially, this is not a story about fighting the hall of mirrors. It is a story about discovering the path back to oneself. About an inner anchor that reminds you who you are, even when the whole world is trying to tell you something else.

"Twisted Mirrors" serves as the final single preceding the release of her new EP, "Unbound," on July 31. The EP, partially funded by LATGA, draws inspiration from the growing culture of video game music, film scores, and fantasy realms, marking a direction Buškevičiūtė feels allows her to fully express her creative vision in a niche but personally resonant genre.

A large part of this work was born in collaboration with a Norwegian team of creators, with whom we have been developing my epic cinematic music direction for several years. The song was recorded in Bergen, and the entire creative journey was special and magical in its own way.
