AI and cooling essentials create heat-safe construction sites in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung is pioneering a new standard for worker safety in its Asia Bay Smart Public Housing project, integrating artificial intelligence with "cooling essentials" to combat extreme heat on construction sites. The initiative, a collaboration between the city's Urban Development Bureau and Labor Bureau, aims to create a benchmark for smart city development that prioritizes the well-being of its construction workforce.

The project site is equipped with "cooling essentials" including shaded tents, misting machines, and mobile hydration stations. These provide immediate relief, while mandatory rest periods during high temperatures and a "heat acclimatization period" for new workers are implemented to mitigate heat-related illnesses. This comprehensive approach ensures workers can manage the demanding conditions.

Beyond physical measures, the site utilizes an AIoT smart management and technology-based disaster prevention system. This system uses AI to continuously monitor on-site temperature, humidity, heat index, noise, and particulate matter. When environmental indicators exceed safe levels, the system automatically activates sprinklers and other cooling measures, demonstrating the effective application of smart technology in occupational safety.

Urban Development Bureau Director Wu Wen-yen stated that the city government's public works are setting an example by upgrading traditional safety awareness to a high-temperature response mechanism that combines technology and systematic protocols. He emphasized that heat protection is not just about preventing occupational accidents but is a form of respect and care for the city's builders. The bureau plans to promote these successful practices to ensure all hardworking laborers can work safely and healthily.
