AI boom diverts crypto miners from Bitcoin to data centers

The burgeoning field of artificial intelligence is luring cryptocurrency miners away from Bitcoin, redirecting their substantial computing infrastructure towards AI development.

Firms that previously invested heavily in specialized computer hardware for Bitcoin mining are now repurposing these resources. This pivot is driven by the falling value of Bitcoin since its peak in November 2025, which has significantly reduced the profitability of mining operations.

As Bitcoin mining yields diminish, these companies are increasingly seeking new revenue streams. They are striking lucrative deals with AI companies, such as Anthropic, which require vast amounts of computing power to develop and train their advanced models. Anthropic, for instance, is investing billions in infrastructure to maintain its competitive edge in the AI landscape.

Both Bitcoin and AI infrastructure rely on networks of powerful computers housed in data centers. These computers process complex mathematical problems to validate transactions in Bitcoin's case, and to run AI algorithms in the other. While Bitcoin miners were rewarded with newly issued cryptocurrency, the declining value of these rewards, coupled with the falling cryptocurrency prices, has made the venture less attractive.
