Traffic expert analyzes robotaxi incident: 'Driver acted intentionally'

A recent incident involving a robotaxi and a conventional car in a Zagreb roundabout has sparked debate, with traffic expert Željko Marušić offering a different interpretation than initially suggested by shared footage. While some claimed the autonomous vehicle cut off another car, Marušić argues the video points to intentional provocation by the human driver.

According to Marušić's analysis, the robotaxi clearly signaled its intention to move from the inner to the outer lane to exit the roundabout. However, the driver of the car in the outer lane first slowed down and then accelerated as the robotaxi began its maneuver. Marušić contends that this latter action by the human driver created the conflict, not any error by the autonomous system.

Marušić stressed that the situation should not be automatically labeled as a failure of autonomous driving technology. He stated that while the robotaxi's adherence to traffic rules needs verification, the other driver's actions are equally, if not more, critical to understanding the event. He expressed concern that some drivers might deliberately test or exploit the safety protocols of autonomous vehicles, potentially leading to dangerous situations.

This incident, Marušić believes, highlights a broader challenge for the future of autonomous transport: how these vehicles will navigate unpredictable or aggressive behavior from human drivers. He cautioned against drivers intentionally creating conflicts, such as cutting off robotaxis or causing sudden braking, emphasizing that "a robotaxi is not a testing ground for frustrated, curious, or irresponsible drivers." Marušić also recommended that the police investigate the incident to identify the vehicle and driver involved, ensuring accountability and gathering data to address these emerging issues.
