AI company Anthropic files for U.S. IPO

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has taken the first formal steps toward a public offering on the U.S. stock market. The company announced it has submitted a confidential draft registration statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a move that allows for a potential listing pending SEC review and market conditions.

This development comes shortly after Anthropic secured an additional $65 billion in investment, boosting its valuation to $965 billion and positioning it as more valuable than rival OpenAI. The company, known for its chatbot Claude, was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and receives backing from major tech players like Google and Amazon, with Microsoft and Nvidia also planning significant investments.

Anthropic's IPO plans mirror those of other major tech entities. SpaceX, Elon Musk's space exploration company, is reportedly aiming for a $75 billion issuance at a $1.75 trillion valuation. OpenAI is also said to be preparing its own confidential IPO filing in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is engaged in a legal dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense. The company restricted the military's unrestricted use of its AI technologies due to security concerns, leading the Pentagon to label Anthropic a "supply chain security risk." This situation contrasts with OpenAI's recent agreement with the U.S. government. Additionally, German security officials have voiced concerns about potential misuse of Anthropic's AI model, Mythos, by criminals or state actors for cyberattacks.
