AI Complaints Against Lawyers Rise in Flanders

Flemish bar associations are observing a notable increase in disciplinary complaints filed against lawyers who are using artificial intelligence to draft legal documents. This trend, detailed in the annual report by the Supervisory College of the Flemish Bar, highlights growing concerns within the legal profession.

While AI-generated complaints are often presented with formal polish and better structure, bar leaders report that their content can be difficult to follow. These documents frequently cite non-existent or inapplicable legal rules, sometimes drawing from Dutch jurisprudence. The AI's tendency to produce lengthy submissions also adds to the workload for processing and responding to these complaints, which is perceived as particularly disruptive.

Despite the challenges, the bar leaders are not advocating for higher barriers to filing complaints. Instead, they are seeking common guidelines to manage unjustified AI-generated complaints. The Supervisory College warns that frivolous complaints, potentially amplified by AI, will continue to demand significant attention. The overall number of opened disciplinary files saw a marked increase, rising from 268 in the previous year to 426 between September 2024 and August 2025.
