AI Dictation Tool Boosts Efficiency for Belgian Home Nurses

Home nurses in East Flanders are embracing artificial intelligence to streamline their administrative tasks, significantly reducing the time spent on paperwork. The Wit-Gele Kruis Oost-Vlaanderen has implemented an AI tool that allows its nurses to dictate patient records directly into their tablets, a method far more efficient than traditional typing.

This innovative technology, developed by the Ghent-based company Squire, converts spoken language into structured data at a rate of approximately 150 words per minute, compared to the much slower pace of typing. The AI not only transcribes the speech but also intelligently places the information into the correct fields within the patient's file, automatically filling in details like the date. It can even prompt nurses for missing information or proactively inform them about the next patient on their schedule.

Stan Callewaert, CEO of Squire, explained that the tool goes beyond simple speech-to-text conversion. "Everything happens via AI," he stated, emphasizing its ability to create structured data. This automation frees up considerable time for nurses, allowing them to dedicate more attention to direct patient care, a crucial aspect of their demanding profession. Nurses typically make dozens of notes per shift, and reducing the administrative burden is a significant benefit.

The AI tool is integrated into the existing tablets used by the nurses, ensuring a seamless user experience. The system is proficient in recognizing Dutch words and is continuously improved through ongoing software updates. Nurses can even add new words to the tool's vocabulary, allowing it to learn and adapt to specific terminology, further enhancing its accuracy and utility in daily practice.
