AI wunderkind Leopold Aschenbrenner has fallen from grace after his investment fund, Situational Awareness, lost billions in July. The fund, established in June 2024, was valued at $45 billion in early July but saw its tech index investments plummet. Banks grew uneasy and on July 30, ordered the sale of $16 billion in shares, despite Aschenbrenner inviting investors to deposit new funds on July 24 due to an "exceptionally attractive buying opportunity."

On July 30, banks noted a significant drop in the fund's investment value and demanded additional collateral, which the fund could not provide. Consequently, Aschenbrenner's fund was forced to sell $16 billion in shares, which were immediately bought by the hedge fund Citadel.

Aschenbrenner, who is secretive about his birth year, has avoided publicity, giving his last interview two years ago. He has now been thrust into the spotlight by the forced sale of billions in shares. Dubbed an "AI wunderkind" by The Wall Street Journal, Aschenbrenner's journey began in Berlin before he moved to New York at fifteen to study economics and mathematics at Columbia University. He founded Columbia College Effective Altruism, a movement focused on using investments for good, and graduated top of his class at nineteen in 2021.

He then worked at OpenAI, joining the "superalignment team" with co-founder Ilya Sutskever. However, he was fired in 2024, suspected of leaking internal company information, a charge he vehemently denies. Aschenbrenner's life appears to be one of constant haste, evident in his accelerated education. Two months after his dismissal from OpenAI, he published "Situational Awareness," a 165-page document dedicated to Sutskever, predicting the "AGI race" would begin by late 2025, with machines surpassing college graduates by early 2026. "The world will soon wake up," he wrote, suggesting only a few hundred people currently understand.
