AI Restores Faded Portraits of April 19 Revolution Martyrs in Busan

In preparation for the 66th anniversary, the Busan Facilities Corporation has undertaken a commendable project to restore the faded portraits of the fallen heroes housed at the Central Park memorial.

Many of the 46 portraits had suffered the ravages of time, with facial features becoming indistinct and difficult to identify. This degradation risked diminishing the visual connection to these important historical figures. By employing advanced AI image restoration technology, the corporation has successfully revitalized 33 of these portraits, bringing clarity and definition back to the faces of those who sacrificed for democracy.

This initiative involved meticulous work, including high-resolution scanning of the original photos and applying AI algorithms to sharpen contours and expressions. Local photo studios, which traditionally manage the portraits, participated with a shared sense of purpose, contributing their expertise at minimal cost. Crucially, the process included consultations with the families of the martyrs, ensuring their input in selecting the subjects for restoration and verifying the results.

Busan Facilities Corporation President Lee Sung-lim expressed hope that "citizens will reflect on the meaning of the April 19 Revolution while viewing the AI-restored portraits." This sentiment highlights the project's dual aim: preserving historical memory and leveraging modern technology to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the revolution's legacy. The restored images will be unveiled on April 19th, allowing attendees of the commemoration ceremony to pay their respects with renewed clarity.
