AI system helps seize tax-delinquent Mercedes-Benz in Taiwan; owner pays up within an hour

Taiwanese authorities have successfully utilized an AI-powered system to track down and seize a luxury vehicle belonging to a woman who had long evaded taxes. The woman, a resident of Taitung City, owed around $53,000 in license plate taxes and road management fees from 2024 to 2026.

Despite multiple notices and attempts to seize her financial assets, authorities had only managed to recover a small portion of the debt. An earlier attempt to seize the Mercedes-Benz in July was unsuccessful as the car had already left the location. However, a subsequent operation on July 17, employing the "AI Action Detective" system in collaboration with the Taitung County Tax Bureau, led to the car's successful location and seizure while parked on the roadside.

Upon learning of her car's seizure, the woman promptly paid the entire outstanding amount within an hour, securing the return of her vehicle. The Hualien Branch of the Ministry of Justice's Executive Enforcement Agency highlighted the effectiveness of smart technology in law enforcement, noting that such systems significantly improve vehicle tracking efficiency. From January to June this year, the agency has seized 34 vehicles for long-term tax and fine arrears.

The agency urged individuals with outstanding public monetary obligations to pay promptly. For those facing financial difficulties, it advised them to proactively contact the agency to arrange installment payments, thereby avoiding the inconvenience of vehicle seizure.
