Prosecutors, FDA probe Zhonglian Oil amid contamination scandal; factory gates shut

Taiwanese authorities have launched a major investigation into Zhonglian Oil, a company at the center of a scandal involving carcinogenic soy lashing oil. Prosecutors and officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) entered the company's facilities early this morning to conduct an inspection.

Investigators are being accompanied by Zhonglian Oil personnel as the examination of the premises is underway. The company's high-level management was reportedly notified of the impending inspection yesterday, and all senior staff were present to accompany the investigation team. The large presence of officials surprised employees arriving for work around 8 a.m.

Following the arrival of media, Zhonglian Oil's main gate was closed. Security personnel, citing instructions from management, stated that the company would not be providing external statements and that neither reporters nor other external individuals would be allowed access while the investigation is in progress. The extent of the contamination and the company's role are still being determined.
