Airlines cancel more flights for the king’s funeral

Norwegian and SAS are canceling a number of flights on Wednesday after airport operator Avinor asked airlines to reduce traffic during the king’s funeral.

Norwegian received a request from Avinor last week and another on Monday, the airline’s press chief Catharina Solli told TV 2. The requests resulted in the cancellation of 16 flights, or eight round trips between Oslo and Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger.

Norwegian said passengers had been notified and rebooked onto other flights.

During the periods when we expect the greatest number of flights at the same time, we have asked the airlines to reduce traffic.

SAS has also canceled a long list of departures to Oslo Airport from several of the country’s largest cities, including Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger. “We have a close and constructive dialogue with Avinor about Wednesday, and in cooperation with them we are making some adjustments related to the operation of the traffic program that day,” SAS press chief Øystein Schmidt said in a message to NTB.

Avinor said it was in close contact with the airlines. “During the periods when we expect the greatest number of flights at the same time, we have asked the airlines to reduce traffic,” communications adviser Camilla Walla said. She added that the airlines had shown considerable understanding and flexibility in an “extraordinary situation.”
