Aftenposten was founded by Christian Schibsted in 1860 and is wholly owned by Schibsted, a Nordic media company. Following a corporate restructuring in June 2024, Schibsted's news media operations were acquired by the Tinius Trust, which holds a controlling stake to safeguard editorial independence from commercial or political influences.

Historically, Aftenposten maintained a conservative stance, aligning with the Norwegian Conservative Party, before positioning itself as an independent center-right newspaper. During World War II, it was subjected to German occupational directives and Nazi editorial management. The outlet is recognized as Norway's newspaper of record and has received awards for its journalism, including 'Media House of the Year' in 2023. Aftenposten aims to strengthen democracy and freedom of speech through trusted journalism, and is perceived as fact-oriented and trustworthy. It engages in investigative reporting, such as a 2022 series on housing registration irregularities among politicians, and is currently experimenting with AI for homepage personalization and expanding video content for social media to reach younger audiences.
